What is the Civil Services Examination?

The Civil Services Examination (CSE) is conducted by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) annually to recruit officers into the Indian Administrative Service (IAS), Indian Police Service (IPS), Indian Foreign Service (IFS), and other Central Services.

Exam Pattern: 3-Stage Process

1. Preliminary Examination (Objective Type)

    Purpose: Screening Test

    Papers:    

  • General Studies Paper I – 100 questions, 200 marks    
  • CSAT (General Studies Paper II) – 80 questions, 200 marks (qualifying paper – 33% needed)    
  • Negative Marking: 1/3rd mark deducted for each wrong answer

    Syllabus Highlights:

  • Current Affairs, History, Polity, Economy, Environment, Geography, Science & Tech (GS I) 
  • Comprehension, Logical Reasoning, Mathematics, Decision Making (CSAT)

2. Main Examination (Descriptive/Written)

  •     9 Papers Total, 1750 Marks (7 counted + 2 qualifying)
  •     Paper A & B: Qualifying (Indian Language + English) 
  •     Papers I to VII: Essay, GS I to IV, Optional Paper - I & II.

3. Personality Test / Interview

  •     Marks: 275 
  •     Focus: Personality, Awareness, Opinion, Communication


How to Prepare Effectively?

1. Understand the Syllabus Thoroughly

  • Break it into micro-topics. Download the official syllabus PDF and keep it always handy.

2. Build a Strong Foundation (NCERTs + Standard Books) Start with:

  • Polity: M Laxmikanth
  • History: NCERTs, Spectrum
  • Geography: NCERTs, G.C. Leong, Atlas
  • Economy: NCERT + Newspapers
  • Environment: Shankar IAS
  • Science & Tech: Current affairs + Basic NCERTs

3. Regular Current Affairs Preparation

  • Read The Hindu/Indian Express daily
  • Use monthly compilations
  • Revise and make short notes
  • Relate current events with static syllabus

4. Answer Writing Practice (for Mains)

  • Begin with daily writing (150–250 words)
  • Join test series
  • Focus on structure: Introduction, Body, Conclusion
  • Use flowcharts, diagrams, and data

5. Mock Tests & Revision

  • For Prelims: Take MCQ tests regularly
  • For Mains: Practice GS and Optional answers
  • Revise each subject multiple times

6. Choose Optional Subject Wisely

  • Based on interest, background, and syllabus overlap with GS
  • Popular subjects: Sociology, PSIR, Geography, History, Anthropology, Literature
  • Mental Strength & Time Management
  • Stay consistent with your daily schedule (6–8 hrs study)
  • Avoid burnout; take short breaks
  • Practice meditation or physical activity to manage stress
